A brand-new album release from Spitty has a unique approach to not only bending genres but bringing his own cultural ancestry into his musical output and the record comes across with so much color and vibrancy that by the time you get halfway through the record, you begin to expect the unexpected.
There is a lot about the Motherland album that wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to and that doesn't only have to do with the tonality of the record but also the character and personality that it actually delivers as well.
The whole thing has an outstanding musical and cultural flair to it that makes things exciting, unique, and extremely refreshing.
There is an amazing balance of color and edginess, honesty, and new approaches that all come together for this one record and it's one of the albums that I can absolutely say you should be listening to from beginning to end.
Not only do some of these songs feel interconnected almost like a concept album would but, if you only listen to one or two tracks from this record then you're not going to get anywhere near the full spectrum of what the album actually has to offer as a whole.
The release is rooted in hip-hop but expands outwards into the world of pop, R&B, soul, and plenty more, so the album has plenty of surprises around the corners and you can really hear Spitty's love for his craft shining through across this record.
It's been a long time since I've heard such a well-built album that has a confluence to it but still so much diversity and a wild array of textures that come together to create this sort of atmosphere that you end up really falling into.
There are some tracks on this record that you can tell me a lot about the artist and he did an amazing job of collaborating with a slew of other artists on the record and this helps the songs each stand on their own two legs.
The level of vibrancy and energy that is given across the record comes in waves and the whole thing ends up feeling alive and breathing in its own way.
I think that you will be pleasantly surprised at the vast cultural overtones that hit throughout the unfolding of this record because it makes things so alluring.
The whole thing was very conscious, it was very genuine, it had tons of character, it was delivered and given with smart lyrical phrasing and an excitable local style, and the production of this release was next level.
This was an album that again, has its roots in hip-hop but does pull this personal undertone and blends his heritage and culture into the music in such a unique fashion that you almost don't want the record to end.
I definitely love the songs that are very personal and just give off that raw honesty because that's how you know everything is so authentic.
When you listen to a record like this, you get engulfed in it and by the time it's over you have to sort of snap yourself back into reality again because you got pulled away from your surroundings and put in these other places for moments in time and that to me, is sort of like a gift musically.
This was an outside-the-box record released with fewer boundaries than the norm and that is what makes it so special.
With the release of the Motherland album, we wanted to have a sit-down with Spitty to talk more about what actually inspired it and what might be coming up next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Hello Spitty and thanks so much for taking some time! Congrats on your headlining show coming up later this month! I would love to start off with the Motherland album.
This record boasted such a rich cultural backing, and I really loved the lyrical phrasing approaches and mix of classic and fresh hip-hop! Where did this record come from?
SPITTY: Thank you for the great praise.
I want to put on for my people. This album is a decade of developing my musical and rapping style in the making. My first album Full Circle was my introduction as an artist to the world. This album is more than that - it’s an album that showcases where I’ve come from and what has made me who I am.
BUZZ SLAYERS: I am certainly hearing a fluctuation of styles on this album. Can you give us some of your biggest musical influences?
SPITTY: This album is definitely me pushing the boundaries of my musicality. I grew up listening to artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, Kanye West. I later got into artists like Mac Miller, Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi. I also like listening to other non-rap artists like Bob Marley and Pink Floyd.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Again, congrats on that upcoming show! Are there more lined up or perhaps a small tour in the works?
SPITTY: This show is going to be the test run to plan a lot more. I don’t want to give away too much, but I’m focused on making this show as big as possible, and if all goes well, many more will follow.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Who is in your headphones right now?
SPITTY: The last song I was listening to is Say Wassup by Black Hippy (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock). I’m always listening to the songs I grew up on. But recently I’ve been big on ThatMexicanOT, his flow, brand, and style are very unique and refreshing in rap these days.
BUZZ SLAYERS: This album is massive and I'm sure you are proud of it! How long did this take you to put together and how do you feel about the outcome?
SPITTY: It’s been over 2 years in the making. A lot of times along the way it got stuck or went wrong but, in the end, it turned out beautifully. Every time I listen to it, I feel the need to run it right back from the start. I’m truly proud of it. I was really proud of my first album too and I’m glad to say I topped that one with this one.
BUZZ SLAYERS: What is your absolute favorite part about making music?
SPITTY: Writing the lyrics. I got into rap because of the lyrics, and that still remains my favorite part to do. Hip hop is poetry, and there’s beauty in the lyricism if you’re paying attention to the right artists.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Would you say you are more of a recording artist, or do you get a lot from performing live?
SPITTY: I love performing live. I’m trying to do a lot more performances in my career, and with the momentum building right now, I know it’s going to happen. I thrive off energy, and I love emitting that while on stage to the audience at hand.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Now that this record is out there, what's next for you as an artist?
SPITTY: I’m promoting this album constantly. The streams are only increasing, and people are constantly finding out about me every day. I’m excited to see how far we can take this album. Next year I’ll be back to dropping new music, and I’ve already started working on some of that.
BUZZ SLAYERS: What are you doing when you are not making music?
SPITTY: Playing sports like tennis or basketball, riding my bike, chilling with the homies in Brampton and Toronto, playing chess (add me spitty95 on chess.com), and a whole lot more. I love life, there’s so much I enjoy doing, but most of my time is dedicated to building my music career right now because I know my potential.
BUZZ SLAYERS: Amazing record and thanks again for taking the time to talk with us! Before we go, what do you want to say to fans out there?
SPITTY: I appreciate you all reading this. I hope y’all have a great rest of your day, week, life. If you got a goal keep going for it and don’t stop believing in yourself. You are great.
