A new single release from Salmon Shorts delivers something kind of special in terms of a dreamy and indie pop soundscape that blends in elements of contemporary rock, and even jazz in its veins but it really comes with this sort of character that you end up getting attached to and I think that's something that it's hard throughout the track.
There's something slightly nostalgic and relatable about "between you & me" and the track comes with a warmth in its tonality which is something that feels strangely welcoming, but it lets you get wrapped up in the textures of the song itself.
There are some great surprises around the corners of this track, and it does have a little bit of a soft rock backbone of course but the guitar work on it is really amazing because they go through different effects to lay on top of that sort of jazz guitar structure and the song ends up feeling kind of colorful.
The whole thing is semi-dreaming with a smooth and forward-moving flow that lets you get engulfed in the song easily, but it feels good to do just that.
The beats, drumming, and keys are essential on this track because they all give that indie pop undertone. The keys have a very specific sort of texture to them, and it really ends up filling the space and making the song sound lush and thick which to me, felt quite soothing actually.
One of the things I loved about this track is that you can feel and hear these different kinds of influences coming through and it all points to something unique. You can hear classic rock influence, jazz influence, cinematic drive, and dream pop all over this thing but it rolls all those things up into a ball and gives off its own atmosphere and, once you're in that atmosphere, you just don't want to leave.
The vocals are outstanding here because they add that great layer of melody to the track as well and give it that personal feel and that's where a lot of the character of this track actually comes in.
Nothing about this is really overdone or overwhelming. Everything is balanced really well dynamically, and the mix of the track is outstanding.
This track really takes over and that is part of why it has this aesthetic to it that makes you feel like it's familiar but still refreshing.
For me, the most imperative aspect of the entire track is actually the bass.
The bass is recorded with such a specific tone to it that it feels like it was done in the 1970s. It's got such a tube-style warmth, and this vintage spread that it takes control of the vibe of the track itself and adds this particular drive to it.
You can tell there was a lot of attention to detail paid during the creation of this track, but it still has this great personality that's robust and comes through for the whole course and when the song is over you want to just listen to it again.
This is one of those songs that have a color and a catchiness but it's one that you think about after the song is over.
Once the song is over you have that bass line and sound just bouncing around in your head. The colors of the keys and the whole sort of gorgeous and graceful textural balance of the entire song.
This was awesome and I really enjoyed soaking it in because it made me feel good.
I love songs that pull me away from what I'm doing and put me in a different place.
Listen to this track with headphones. That's my best advice. Headphones will give you the full feel and warmth of the song tonally.
And again, in case I haven't expressed this enough, which I'm sure I have, the tone of this track is everything.
Take a deep dive into this track and let it just swim around in the air that's around you.
Remember where you heard it first.
