Robert Lee Cuff & Maggot Brain Drop a Killer Record

A massive album release from Robert Lee Cuff with Maggot Brain hits a soiree of rock soundscapes with a gritty and almost fuzz tone heaviness that blends psychedelic rock with a thrashing blues metal undertone along with hints of punk rock that peeks through as the album unfolds.

The Crenshawdelic record is riddled with memorable and Soulful riffs that come through with all the heaviness and sonic drive that you could possibly imagine, and it's done with this sort of swagger and it all hits with an impactful feel that puts you right there in the moment.

It sounds almost like a lot of this record was recorded live on the floor. At least the guitars and drums may have been recorded at the same time so that you get this live performance sort of energy and synergism that lets the record feel like you're standing right there as they're doing it.

This is the kind of thing that gives the album a massive drive and you can't really escape that kind of energy no matter how hard you try. It is infectious and addictive to say the very least and this whole record provides that energy throughout its entire course from beginning to end.

You can hear heavier influences as I mentioned earlier, punk, metal, but also that Soulful classic rock and blues style is a huge aspect to this record.

You can hear slews of influences coming in and out of the album as it plays through and it's just so ridiculously fun to listen to because it Blends that color and that edginess incredibly well.

The riffs are outstanding as is the guitar tone throughout the album and the drumming is just super alive and in your face.

This is a record that hits hard when it wants to but also delivers that Soul when it wants to. Half the time it does both of those at once.

Sometimes the guitar work is a little bit more thrashy and heavier while other times it's more soulful and deepening.

Either way, you're getting an earful, and it comes in waves of intensity and layers of crazy tonality.

Just listening to the record lets you know that seeing this project live would be outstanding simply because if they can capture that kind of energy on record then seeing them live would be a real face-melter, and I mean that in a good way.

Vocally, this record is killer all the way through. It's amazing how the vocalist can sort of bend his character to the framework of a song. Sometimes the approach is more animated vocally, while others it's a bit more straightforward but either way you're getting that intensity coming through and you're listening to what he's saying as well.

Some of the songs are actually quite personal lyrically.

I absolutely adore the level of experimental trippiness that goes on through this record. It provides plenty of surprises around its corners.

This is what I mean by colorful. The record is actually very colorful, robust, lush, and surprising, and by the time you get halfway through it you've been engulfed by this experience.

This is one of the reasons I would suggest listening to the album as a whole.

Listening to one or two songs from the record may give you a slight idea of what you might expect but will not give you anywhere near the spectrum of what the entire album has to offer.

This record is a full-on escape. It takes you to this funky crazy, wild, and slightly rambunctious rock world.

That's the thing. Once you're in this record, you don't want it to end.

This was a wild one and it is quite a super fun ride. I feel like Robert Lee Cuff and Maggot Brain make an incredible pair and the collaboration between the two is a match made in heaven.

The attitudes, energies, and even characters align.

This is a record meant to be cranked nice and loud so don't be afraid to do that by the way.

Take a deep dive into this record, and again, listen to it in full because it's the best way to soak it all in.

Remember where you heard this first.
