A brutal EP release from Plague Doctor delivers a soiree of deepening tonality that rumbles and hits this cross between doom and sludge metal as it thrashes and blisters through three tracks of relentless and high-impact soundscape.
The Get Well Soon EP wastes absolutely no time coming in with these super deep-toned guitars that have a fierceness and fire behind them with widened and crunching refs that display a gritty texture that has the ability to engulf you very quickly.
One of the things I love about this record is how it actually does blend several subgenres of metal together to create something that's got its own atmosphere and throughout it all it does have this sort of dark almost gothic edginess in its underbelly.
The guitars and bass must be in drop B or drop C. Something that really gives them that super deep tonality and it works wonders for the music because these songs are ultra sludgy, and they're meant to come through that way. This is because they bring together doom metal along with some death metal elements including the vocals.
I definitely love the approach here because they're holding nothing back. And the songs come through with an explosive energy to the point where it feels like they were recorded live on the floor, right there in the moment and everyone involved was feeding off each other's energies the entire time.
When you listen to this record, you just want to see them perform it live in your face simply because if this kind of energy and tone is captured so well on record, then seeing them live must be a face-melter.
I have to love hearing a band on record and immediately knowing that they're going to be awesome live. It's something that you don't come across often so when it does happen it hits you like a ton of bricks.
Now, along with the super deep and thick, full-bodied, and robust tones of the guitars in the base, the drumming really gives the record its drive.
The drum performance on this is also what gives that live performance style feel as well. It added so much to the energy and the aesthetic of the record it's crazy.
You can also tell that the drummer was probably influenced by some death metal or thrash metal as well because that's where that element comes in strongest.
Now, a lot of the guitar work is inventive also. There are some surprises around the corners which is something I loved about the record as well.
The vocals are a major form of intensity for this release. They add more fire and come through with a fierce screaming approach that also beckons elements of thrash and death metal as well and I think that the combination of heavy genres rolled up into one EP really is something well worth diving into.
This is an EP that you should be listening to all the way through. Once you're in it, you're in it. The first track gives you a great glimpse of what you can expect but there are songs here that bring even more impact than the first track does. The whole record packs a heavy sucker punch to the gut and it's something that any fan of metal, sludge, deathcore, grindcore, or anything good and heavy will love.
Check this out and remember where you heard it first.
