A new release from Organoclorados delivers a classic post-punk and indie rock approach that, at times, can breed quite a thick atmosphere with cinematic backbone, slight haunts in its undertone, and a lush soundscape that you get engulfed in really easily.
The Dreams and Falls album starts off with an amazing song that introduces you to some of what you might expect to hear on the rest of the release. This track is called "Days and Roses".
The song features organs that fill the space and atmosphere in the background of the track along with slightly experimental and almost psychedelic guitar work, and upbeat swing, and some of those classic post-punk overlaying guitar lines that have just the right amount of reverb effect on them and lay out melodic lines that stick in your brain for hours.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a perfect track to introduce the record with because it features a lot of the staples that you hear throughout the course of the release.
You get a lot of experimental tonalities but also some pop underbelly and plenty of danceable tracks as well. These songs are a beautiful cross of being colorful, pop-coated, and edgy at the same time.
Songs like "Unreal Searches" boasted a bit of a different direction. This one feels like it's influenced by a southern tonality. It's got an almost folk and classic rock drive to it. Those organs are still evident, and the guitar work has a bit more twang, as do the vocals.
The deeper into the album you go, the more influences you start seeing and hearing. This is part of the beauty of an album like this one. You don't know what exactly to expect next, but you do know it's going to be worth listening to.
This is an album you listen to from beginning to end. Listening to one or two tracks will not give you the full range of what it has to offer.
Again, you might get an idea of what you can expect on certain tracks, but listening to the full album as a whole is the only way to go with this kind of record.
This is more of an experience than just an album, and it spans 12 songs and almost an hour in length.
There are loads of surprises around its corners and tons of personality that just come oozing out for you to soak up.
Tracks like "Strange Crossroads" give off more of that folk-rock feel, but still with that hint of edginess. This one feels more cinematic and emotionally driven, which you get plenty of throughout the record as well.
Again, there are a lot of unexpected surprises as the album unfolds, and if you listen to this record with headphones on, you can really soak in all of the layers of texture, guitar work, and this beautiful sort of live performance energy that it has to offer.
Some songs give strong messages, and others just tell great stories, and lyrically, you end up getting attached to some of those.
Some of them feel quite relatable at times, and others let you paint pictures in your head as the song plays.
I love these aspects because they help build the persona that the record delivers.
This was a brilliantly woven release that really floored me simply because there were so many wonderful approaches. It just showcases how this band is able to bring in a slew of influences and roll them all up into one record that feels cohesive and makes perfect sense. These songs go together like puzzle pieces.
Again, listen to this whole thing in one shot, from front to back. It's the best way to go because you get the full experience.
This is the kind of record that makes me think of a time when you'd go and buy an album from the store and pop on some headphones. You would listen to the full album all at once and just be taken into this other world for a chunk of time.
Dreams and Falls does this perfectly.
With such an in-depth record, we wanted to have a talk with Organoclorados to find out where this album came from and what might be coming up next for the band.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about the Dreams and Falls record! This was such a great blend of post-punk, rock, and more! Where did this record come from?
At first, we just selected a few songs from our collection to record, but we thought of a concept that made sense in terms of the themes of the lyrics and at the same time demonstrated the creative diversity of the band. In the end, this proposal reinforces our musical identity, which is something we really like because it reveals coherence with our trajectory. We think the album is a compelling blend of post-punk, gothic rock, and a rich tapestry of influences including hard rock, psychedelia, blues, and Brazilian rhythms.
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches on this record! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
This is typical in our sound. We always put our influences together and mix them. It is a kind of a natural composition and arrangement method. Also, we like to experiment a lot and stay open minded to new possibilities. Our biggest influences are The Doors, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, Led Zeppellin, R.E.M. and regional music.
Buzz Slayers: Are you guys performing live right now? Any touring in support of this release?
Yes. In fact, the band usually performs live shows, and we are preparing a new set list to promote the songs of this release and some new attractions on the stage. Meanwhile, we are looking for new places to make concerts in different cities to support this release. Here in Brazil, it is not so easy to an indie rock band to organize a special tour, especially because of the lack of Money and investors.
Buzz Slayers: Did you guys record this in a home studio setup, or did you go to a big studio for this?
The album was recorded at Jimbo Studio, a local studio located in Alagoinhas, a small town of the state of Bahia, Brazil. It is not a big studio, but they work very well.
Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for the band?
We know that it is somewhat daring for a Brazilian band to sing rock in English, but we really want our sound to cross borders. Perhaps, by overcoming the language barrier, we can make this reach a little easier. Organoclorados is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and we will be holding special shows, social media promotions and various publicity events. The release of the album Dreams and Falls is one of these activities.
Buzz Slayers: Are you planning any music videos in the near future?
Yes. Right now, two scripts for music videos are in the conceptual drafting phase and we are researching images and locations. The band's YouTube channel is quite active, and we have several music videos produced by the band published on it, as a tool for promoting our music.
Buzz Slayers: Who's in all your headphones right now?
Bauhaus, Radiohead, Siouxsie and the Banshes, Brazilian Indie Rock.
Buzz Slayers: This was pretty big record! Was it a big undertaking? How long did it take to finish this?
Oh, Thanks a lot! Yes, it was a big undertaking in many senses. Starting with the recording schedule, which had to be fitted into the band members' personal schedules and the studio's availability. In addition, the band maintains its concert and rehearsal schedule. Not to mention the financial organization to cover the investment. Some of the recording sessions we did even during the years of COVID-19 pandemia, which brought an additional emotional component. It took three years to complete this, including recording, mixing and mastering.
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
Dreams and Falls seeks to demonstrate the band's evolution and creative maturity, with lyrics that explore themes of fantasy, romance, dreams and collapse, emotional conflict and existential reflection. Each track is permeated by thought-provoking melodies, careful arrangements and hypnotic grooves with the potential to please fans of 80s post-punk and gothic as well as contemporary alternative rock.
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
Each song on this album was generated and constructed with sincerity and heart. Through music we want to convey our interpretation of the world around us. If this journey somehow connects us with the listener, we will be happy and fulfilled. So, we hope to have the chance to gain your attention and a little of your time to get to know us. Resistance and strength always.
