An album release from Mindistry hits with a combination of thrash, death, and melodic metal but also brings a lot of other elements to the table that add an air of vastness and expansive undertones along with an almost orchestrated metal approach at times while still feeling robust, cinematic, and edgy.
The Doppelganger album is loaded with a unique breed of honesty as the lyrics really display different aspects of struggle and concepts of life from our particular perspective, but it's all done with this very straightforward lyrical approach that really lets you get attached and understand what's going on along with being able to completely relate to a lot of the stuff that's being said.
Throughout all of this, you get fierce riffs along with almost vintage-feeling synths and keys that all build an atmosphere you end up getting wrapped up in quite quickly.
This is the type of album that you listen to from beginning to end so that you can really soak in everything that it's meant to give.
Listening to one or two tracks from this record may give you an idea of what you might expect but it will not give you anywhere near the full spectrum of what the album has to offer as a whole.
This is important because if you do listen to the record from beginning to end, then you get the full experience, and it is quite a massive and dark-edged escape.
By the time it's over you have to reacclimate yourself back to your own reality again and this is something that I consider a gift musically because you don't get it often so when it comes around it's very refreshing.
The production on this album is insane. Everything is so crisp but still thick. It all hits super hard but also puts focus on melody along with the trudging riffs, guitar tones, and aggressiveness.
I love that combination of juicy synths and crunching guitars because it does add that vast feel and lets the songs come through with these awesome layers of texture that suck you right in.
The vocals are perfect for the music simply because they're so animated in their own way. The vocals add an almost theatrical feel to the music, and I feel like that's something that lets everything push the envelope.
The drumming, since, and guitars at times, can also bring in elements of industrial into this metal and deep tonality that the album delivers so you do get elements of that Industrial underbelly, and this also adds to those layers and helps the stories get told properly.
Of course, this also builds on that cinematic backbone I mentioned earlier and it's very easy to get hooked into the whole vibe and sentiment of the record itself.
You have to love a record that portrays so much in one release. Not only being able to combine genres and have everything flow seamlessly but also having these levels of heart and intensity that shine through and let the record feel super authentic.
There are a lot of surprises around the corners, and I really enjoyed that as well but those guitar riffs and the actual guitar work across the board is really what drives this thing.
The drumming is massive and the whole thing comes through with a gigantic Sonic drive from beginning to end but it also has that sort of storyline to it and the synths at times, our pads that fill the ether of the songs and let everything come through with a full-bodied soundscape.
You can tell there was a lot of attention to detail during the creation of these songs, but you can also tell that it never loses that character or personality that it starts with in the first place, and this may be the most important aspect of the entire thing.
I loved listening to this record especially as a whole and that's exactly how I will suggest, once again, that you listen to it.
This record is meant to be listened to from start to finish, and if you have the time to do that, then do it loud or listen to it with headphones on because it's also one of the best ways to soak this record in.
Take a deep dive into the Doppelganger album and remember where you heard it first.
