A new single release from LUMENS delivers a massive and sonically powerful soundscape and blends this progressive and intricate, vast and robust guitar work into a blisteringly heavy track as the whole thing breeds a lot of calm before the storm.
"Primrose" is a track that you get pulled right into because some of that vastness comes from this immense guitar intro at the beginning of the track that is accompanied soon after by a bit of a percussion element. This riff is a gorgeous piece of music with a smooth and beautiful flow to it.
The whole intro on the guitar is melodically alluring and enticing. It pulls you into this kind of atmosphere and then boom. It explodes into ultra-heavy but still intricate heavy riffs with crazy timing, blistering drums, and a low-end rumbling beneath your feet.
After this all takes place, it brings you back to that calm before the storm. You have a vaster atmosphere with melodic vocals that start telling a story, and the way the vocals are performed textually blends with the music so incredibly well that you become addicted to the sound.
You start to get a feel for the emotional drive of the song as the vocals come in this way, and you're paying attention to what he's singing.
Now, the vocalist is amazing because not only is he performing with a beautiful sort of intensity, but he's laying out melodies that are so memorable that you can't get him out of your head half the time.
As the song bursts back into that epic and deepening, heavy chorus, you start to get a feel for the shredding metal side of the track, which again, is ultra tight and hits with such a punch that you don't really expect it. It's like a sucker punch.
Of course, after you hear that heavy riff in the beginning of the song, after that intricate intro, you are waiting for it to come back so even though you know it will return, it still hits this way.
There's still that element of surprise in there.
As the track unfolds, you start getting two layers of vocals. One is melodic, and the other is screaming, bringing more intensity to the track again.
You also have a pretty heavy breakdown and an amazing guitar solo that come into play here, which really showcase how this band is heavily guitar-driven, but it also gives you the feeling that everyone is feeding off each other properly.
The drums are incredibly driving and as intricate as the guitars are, especially with the time signatures of some of those riffs.
The bass follows suit, and everyone is just a machine with an outstanding kind of metal technicality and precision.
The whole thing still has emotion, heart, passion, fierceness, and is the kind of track that breaks a little bit of ground in terms of bursting out of boundaries genre-wise.
I love a track that hits this hard and comes through this heavily but also has such a melodic drive and emotional backbone to it.
It's the kind of stuff you don't come across often so when you do hear it it leaves its mark.
LUMENS have quite an amazingly unique approach to what they do, and every element of this band compliments the next. The drums drive the guitars. The guitars drive the bass and vocals, and it all comes together naturally.
It's an absolutely amazing track that grabbed my attention right from that gorgeous guitar intro. Check out "Primrose" right now.
One of the best ways to do this is to watch the new music video that came along with it, which we've taken the privilege of embedding below.
Turn this one up because it is meant for exactly that and believe me, you'll be surprised at the intricacy, passion, and genre morphing that you hear in this track.
Remember where you heard it first.
