Liquid Pennies Are Back with A New Single

A new single release from Liquid Pennies marks a triumphant return, featuring a subtle shift in direction and a tasteful approach to blending their classic, sonically massive soundscape with pop-infused elements that add color and a new addictive dimension to their sound.

"Tapered Scape" comes in focusing on vocals, a subtle and light kind of beat along with synth tones, and a bass line that ends up being the key factor of the track itself.

This ends up growing into something completely different and as it does the velocity and intensity grow with it.

The vocals are performed with this harmony throughout the entire thing. It's a two-part harmony and really lets you pay attention to what's being said along with adding this kind of cinematic and edgy vibe to the undertone of the track.

As the song unfolds it starts growing in that intensity as I mentioned before and you start to realize that pretty soon everything is going to explode.

What's cool about this is that when it reaches the explosive point, instead of just bursting out into fat riffs, a double-tracked guitar solo comes in, and this feels amazing if you listen to the track with headphones on.

As a matter of fact, wearing headphones is absolutely, hands down the best way to listen to this track either way.

The guitar stuff that happens hits hard and has a little bit of sloppiness to it which I love because these guys always have a bit of loose almost live performance energy and vibe to their aesthetic. So, I'm happy that that feeling is still there with this track.

Windows guitars come in the base thickens up and has a harsher more fuzz-tone kind of feel. The drumming opens up as well and becomes something stronger so at this point in the track, everything has leveled up and now is starting to bang.

The vocals bellow out a haunting set of notes as the main guitars and bass align with a massive and deepening riff. The drums are slamming at this point, and you have this full fixture that has come in and you realize you've been engulfed by it all.

Now you're in it. There's a heavy-handed, juicy, fat, sonically driving song that you've been pulled into by these amazing and intricate layers that brought you there.

The drumbeat is a heavy trollop. The kind of drumming that makes you think of an Iron Maiden track.

It's totally driving and pushes everything through the roof.

The song has changed and morphed into a cinematic thrash opus and the whole thing is absolutely immense through to the end of the song.

This is such a brilliant approach because it starts in so much more of a subtle approach and grows into an explosive song, but it doesn't just jump from one to the other.

It goes from the softer more subtle intro and first verse, into the double-tracked guitar section where the bass guitar starts to thicken up and then explodes into the massive riff and from there just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

It's just such a cool approach to how they arranged the song, and it really works in terms of getting you sucked into the atmosphere in their world with this one.

Now, we're no strangers to Liquid Pennies as a band and we've heard a lot of their previous material which has all been amazing. This track is a bit of a shift, but they still keep to their staples to an extent.

This song makes me think of Death from Above 1979 which is a band I've loved for a long time.

The vocals are lush and give melodies and harmonies that draw attention and add texture to the entire song.

This was a brilliant song. Straight up. It's got so much persona and unique energy that before you know it you are at the end of the track and want to start it over.

We wanted to talk to the guys and find out where this is coming from, what this may be a part of and more.

Here's what went down.

Buzz Slayers: Hey guys and welcome back! We're stoked to hear new stuff from you always, but Tapered Scape was something fresh! I loved how this track played out! It felt like a slight change in direction for you guys too. Where did this one come from?

Glad to be here! We’ve been delving into some new territory with drum sample pads, synths, and sequencers for our new album that Tapered Scape is on. The initial drum beat was something Pierson came up with on his drum sample pads one of the very first times we jammed together prior to him joining the band. We had recorded it and I dug it up at one of our rehearsals, creating the initial spark that lead us to write the rest of the song that day.

Buzz Slayers: Have you been listening to new bands lately? If so, who?

There’s a lot of bands I dig that have been putting out new music the past few weeks like Ty Segall, Viagra Boys, Population ii, Dead Meadow, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

Buzz Slayers: Have you been performing shows lately?

We’ve been putting a lot of time and thought into the album but have been doing gigs around our base of the Tampa Bay Area and have quite a few this month.

Buzz Slayers: This single is a glimpse into your upcoming Fore LP correct? When is that scheduled for release?

It is! It comes out July 25th on all formats including a limited-edition vinyl run.

Buzz Slayers: Can we expect more songs of this style on it?

We dip into a lot of styles on this and there’s definitely sounds akin to this one on there.

Buzz Slayers: How long did it take you guys to write and track the new record?

We recorded drums last August at Candor Recording in Tampa, and did the rest independently through the rest of 2024, mixing and adding extra bits as we went and finishing it up in March. We didn’t rush this one but also made a point of over-saturating or over doing it out of boredom staying immersed for too long. We always try to keep the initial inertia of the songs intact.

Buzz Slayers: Any videos coming up?

Keep your eyes out!

Buzz Slayers: Are you guys dropping any other singles before the full LP?

This is the third and final one before the album release, along with our past singles Sight Skewer and Ready Tide.

Buzz Slayers: You guys worked with Ryan Boesch of Candor Recording on the mix and master for this record! He's known for working with legends like The Melvins, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, and more! How did you guys meet him?

Ryan recorded our friends’ band, and we were blown away by it, so we reached out to him as we were wanting to go a different route from our 3rd album Any Wonder that we recorded on our own.

Buzz Slayers: Ryan also started Threat Collection Records who will be releasing the vinyl of the Fore LP this summer right? Did you know that was going to happen beforehand?

The label took shape while this album was being worked on, and we jumped at the opportunity to join forces with him as we’ve had nothing but great experiences working with him. He’s a solid guy to boot!

Buzz Slayers: Once the record releases, will you guys be touring at all in support of it?

Yeah, we can’t wait to play some new and familiar spots outside of Tampa Bay and cause some hearing loss to new ears.

Buzz Slayers: Is the digital version on the LP releasing in the summer as well?

It is, but we implore everyone to buy a record to support bands if you can!

I can't wait to hear it! My turntable is always on (hint hint). I appreciate you guys taking some time! You always push to reach some new boundaries with your stuff and it's a pleasure for us at Buzz Slayers!

Buzz Slayers: Thanks again for talking to us!
