Though one of the latest single releases from Lee Black delivers a lot of unique energy that comes across in the form of a soundscape which crosses funk, so, contemporary pop, and more. The track rolls all of that up into one excitable and almost theatrical style then some of the instrumentation is absolutely outstanding on this single.
"You Could Say" is not an easy song to forget about because it comes across with a colorful and robust approach that borders, again, on that theatrical feel as vocals can be animated, super melodic, and just bouncing with the music so you have this incredibly danceable single that becomes very infectious.
One of the things I love about this track is it's outside the box approach and how it doesn't really conform to any sort of societal genres per se. What I mean is, this is not cookie-cutter by any means and does a great job of being a little bit of an avant-garde but not over the top with it.
It's got a great groove, and actually takes elements of what I would consider to be a more vintage almost 80s and 90s pop approach and a new one, combining them together to create an atmosphere that you really don't want to leave once you're in.
The synth and key work across the song is everything. This is really what the base of the track is about and that's where the jive, the funk, and fun come in.
This of course is followed by that incredible percussion that adds the drive to the track along with the vocals that really come through with a full-bodied and again, sort of animated feel like they are riddled with character right from the get-go.
This was an endlessly fun track that came through vivacious and alluring.
There are layers of vocals that come in and out and build on that atmosphere to the point where, by the end of the track, you have backing vocals that are harmonized, vocals on the forefront that are harmonized, and everything is just performed with a sort of intensity in a way that becomes addicting as well.
They're robust and soulful. They're fun and give the song an alive and breathing feel.
The textures and sounds used for the song really give depth to it and again, kind of build on that classic undertone like this is a song you've been listening to for years and years now.
I love that because it helps you understand the kind of things that influence Lee as a songwriter. The kind of bands and artists he must have listened to growing up that led him to be such a great performer on the keys and vocally.
The whole thing has a gorgeous set of instrumentation and aesthetic that really is nailed and right when the song starts you kind of get a gist for what you are in for.
This is the kind of track that's got that very strong funk groove to it, so you have to dance. You won't be able to sit still and listen to this track; it's nearly impossible.
If you're sitting in your car, you'll be shaking your butt in your seat. If you're at home, you might as well move the couch back so you can really get down with it and dance around the living room.
I think this is the secondary purpose of a song like this. Get up and dance. Feel the energy that's given off on the track which is incredible.
I feel like songs like this are not only very connective musically but also showcase artists that release tracks with fewer boundaries than what you may be used to.
To me, this is kind of a genre bending single and I feel like Lee Black has his finger on the pulse of what an open-ended pop approach is.
Music created with no walls built around it really.
This was endlessly fun, unbelievably, charismatic, vivacious, a little edgy, massively colorful, and it is best listened to nice and loud.
Remember where you heard this first and while you're at it, check out some other releases from Lee Black because he's got a few other singles that show different sides to his songwriting and his personality as well.
I consider this another attribute of a great artist that gives pieces of himself in the music even if it's just for fun.
