A self-titled album release from Laserchrist hits a soiree of what would be considered a cross between classic street and pop punk mixed with garage rock, psych rock, and bits of grunge and it all comes together in a punch-packed and excitable record that blends color with edginess nearly perfectly.
The album wastes no time at all coming in with thriving punk riffs, gritty tonalities, and grungy vocal approaches but that changes as the record unfolds and you begin to hear different influences coming through like postpunk for example.
You have certain tracks with clean guitars and certain kinds of effects like reverb and chorus and you can tell that post-punk is an influence that some of the band incorporates with their music.
You also get plenty of righteous and fuzz-tone garage rock, which is endlessly fun, and these guys perform the record almost like you're watching them live in your face.
This, as a whole, is why you get an awesome atmosphere to sort of step into when you listen to the record.
The energy level is electric, and it feels almost like the whole thing was actually recorded live on the floor and everyone involved was feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
You can clearly hear this is all put together by a band who have a love for their craft and when I say that I don't just mean playing their instruments. I mean writing songs together and putting them out into the world because that's where their hearts are.
Yes, this fun, edgy, sonically driving, and tonally thrashing punk rock soiree has loads of heart in it. When you listen to the songs you can hear that.
These songs have character embedded in their veins.
You can hear influences of all kinds of old and new-school punk rock along with that slightly experimental and trippy undertone which gives it the psychedelic approach but none of it is really over the top, so all the influences are balanced.
This is truly a record you need to listen from beginning to end to get a full grasp on what it has to offer.
Listening to one or two singles from this release will give you a hint of what you might expect, but it does not give you anywhere near the full spectrum of what the record has to offer as a whole.
This release has layers, and it contains all kinds of musical and vocal hooks that stick in your head for hours after the songs have ended.
This is especially fun for people who are actual fans of punk rock because they encompass a whole onslaught of influences in that genre alone but, even if you're not super into punk rock, these songs are catchy, again, super colorful, and the record can be pretty addicting.
You end up getting pop rock, indie rock, alternative rock, and so much more so, the deeper into the record you go, the more eclectic the approaches become, and you find yourself in this whole other world.
This is also part of why the record boasts plenty of surprises around its corners.
A lot of these surprises are due to some outstanding guitar work and inventive riffs that you don't expect coming.
The energy is always there, and there is most certainly a staple sound throughout this record that makes its own, but they do reach outside the box when it comes to bending and blending genres at free will.
I would listen to this record nice and loud because then, it's more fun.
There's a lot to it that lets you know it should be listening too loud or even with headphones on, but I guarantee there will be songs that stay with you when the record's over.
This is a great experience, and when you do listen to the whole album, you come out of it having to shake it all off.
I love listening to a record where you have to reacclimate yourself back to reality again.
You have these youthful cryouts and approaches that add drive to the songs and there are also levels of maturity in there but humorous aspects as well.
This was well put together with a lot of attention to detail and its creation but again, it never loses its character or heart for one second.
A killer punk rock record that blends in tons of other stuff and sort of breaks the boundaries of what you might expect, listen to the Laserchrist album as soon as you can and remember where you heard it first.
