A new release from Joseph Deondre Ford delivers an incredibly smooth R&B flow that brings elements of old and new-school approaches. Its soundscape has a very atmospheric and vast undertone that pulls you in right from the get-go.
"Rose Petals" is the type of track that breeds its own atmosphere. As soon as it starts, you get pulled into this atmosphere, and you can really soak in all these layers of tones and textures that the song gives off.
One of my favorite aspects about this track is how it does indeed take a classic almost 90s element and bring it into a completely refreshing and new platform. You hear little percussion and key sounds that are straight out of classic R&B tracks from the mid to late '90s, and I love that he was able to use those in the production of this to keep things feeling familiar while bringing in that very current and new element.
The vocals are one of the best aspects of this track as a whole. The vocals are performed with a silky approach and plenty of soul, so you can tell that this track probably came from someplace real. That authenticity is something you can feel in the song itself.
The way the vocals bounce in and out of the beats is outstanding. The beat is a little outside the box, so this is not your standard cookie-cutter style R&B single.
There is an auto-tune or sort of vocoder feeling effect on some of the vocals, and if you listen carefully, you can hear these layers of harmonizing backing vocals floating through the ether of the track, giving it much more depth.
The synth pads and keys that give the song that vest undertone are relevant in this track because, again, to deliver the aesthetic and atmosphere it's meant to, those kinds of keys are needed so that you have a thick and spacious soundscape beneath those vocals and beats.
This was definitely well thought out, and you can tell there was plenty of attention to detail during the creation of the song, but there was also a lot of soul behind it too, and that's the part that really comes through the most.
This is a track that has character, and when a song like this comes out and you're able to connect with it, it's something that leaves a mark.
This is a single that showcases Joseph's ability to create a song that feels incredibly radio-friendly but has a message behind it at the same time.
It's a single that lets his presence shine as an artist and takes you into his world for a moment in time, which is a gift to me.
This is indeed a super radio-friendly track as I mentioned. It's the kind of song you could certainly hear either in the clubs late at night, or any popular R&B station in any major city.
As far as we can tell, this is a debut track, at least on Spotify, and it's a really impressive one, especially as an introduction to the artist's abilities.
I suggest not only checking this track out as soon as you can but doing so with headphones on. Again, there are layers here, and it's great to soak in all of that depth and layers with headphones on so you can hear everything the way it was meant to be heard.
As what seems to be a debut track, I'm very impressed and can't wait to hear what comes next from Joseph Deondre Ford.
I'm certainly hoping for more singles that have this kind of aesthetic going on.
