A brand-new single release from Gunnva manages to deliver a pop sheen with contemporary undertones and an honest approach that, in combination, deliver plenty of personality which is the strongest aspect of the song because there are lyrics you connect with and relate to but while understanding the song from her perspective which is quite a beautiful thing.
"In My Heart" is most definitely a track that came from someplace real. You can tell it was driven from experience, and it has a lot of emotional backbone attached to it which is part of why it has such an impactful feel.
There is a lot of straightforwardness in those lyrics and it's something that helps paint a picture while you're listening to the song unfold.
Musically, the song is lush and beautiful. It's got layers of texture that come together and create an atmosphere that you end up getting engulfed in.
Not only are there tons of these gorgeously layered vocals that flow and give the song this drifting almost dreamy feel at times, but you have acoustic guitar come alive drums, and these keys that play a hook and that is something that actually adds to that pop tonality.
The thing about the keys and the hook is that the tones used for that aren't harsh. They're soft and floaty, bringing everything back to that contemporary feel and letting the song come through with all those layers but still with a subtle softness.
There is that soft tone throughout the entire track and it becomes a staple of the song's aesthetic.
Her vocals lay out memorable melodies throughout the track and it's something that you end up wanting to hear more of when the song is over.
There are times when you feel like she's even using her vocals as an instrument itself and that gives you insight as to how she builds songs.
Again, this is a layered track. It doesn't just all come in at once. As a matter of fact, it starts with that keyboard riff which reels you in with the hook and then expands and opens up into a vaster tonality. Throughout all of it, that personality I mentioned earlier is always there.
That almost vulnerable element is on the forefront, and you can tell that when she's creating music the walls are down. She's not afraid to say what she feels or thinks so all those inner thoughts come spilling out for everyone to drink in and that to me, is what makes true art worth listening to.
Having said all that, it's obviously very catchy. It's a pop song, so the hooks and the catchiness are there. But I love that personal perspective and truth spilling because a lot of us can understand certain lines of this track and its sentiment but, not many of us know how to articulate those kinds of thoughts or feelings into words let alone words and music so, when we hear a song like this, we automatically connect with it.
At least that's what it did for me.
And I think it speaks volumes for Gunnva as an artist. The song let her presence come through. The song ended up feeling flowy but impactful simultaneously.
It's also been a while since I heard a really well put together an excellently performed contemporary pop song of this nature because it brings together elements of classic pop and a newer approach as well.
As far as we can tell, this single is part of an upcoming album release and we are just getting a hint of what we hope to expect more of from this record.
Either way, this track will certainly keep me at bay so, dive into this now and listen with headphones.
Remember where you heard it first.
