Coldwards return with a brand-new single that boasts an emotional drive and this cinematic and expansive underbelly that comes through with an impact because it combines that vastness with that emotion. Hence, you end up getting pulled right into this track.
"Sunflower" pulls you in with a spacious drum beat that still yields a bit of heavy-handed impact because the kicks and snares are hit hard. This gives almost a glimpse of the more explosive and heavier chorus that's about to come.
The guitar work, especially during the intro verses, is so cool because it's floating and dreaming. The guitars have these kinds of effects on them in our layered so that they drift through the atmosphere of the song and create this vibe, which builds on that cinematic and powerful approach but also serves as the calm before the storm.
Even the chorus of this track has a lot of emotion behind it and the melodies of the vocals stick with you. Not even just the chorus melodies. The verse vocal melody lines just have a lot of beauty to them.
By the time it does hit that chorus, you're invested. You've been sucked into this track and engulfed by it. You want to know more about where it's going lyrically.
The chorus is very big and hits with a perfect sonic drive if you ask me. It's not only the guitar tones rhythmically, but there's this sort of lead guitar part that's layered on top of those and that gives a melody that bounces and sort of riffs with the vocals and so that combination is really powerful.
You have the rhythm and bass guitars giving you the backbone, a layer of another guitar doing a high-pitched sort of lead hook which by the way, is spacious as well. That lead guitar is not a solo. It's an ambient lick that adds more vastness to this track, and you have vocals giving you a super memorable melody and impact.
The way those three elements are layered on top of each other for those choruses leaves a mark.
I feel like there was a lot of attention to detail and how they arranged and layered this track, but it never loses the heart that it begins with. This song boasts a ton of authenticity and heart, and this is something that gets you attached to it as well.
There is certainly something about how these guys write their music. It's alternative and metal, heavy rock, and it incorporates a bunch of other genres into the mix as they do their thing but it's also super memorable and catchy and I feel like that's the thing that separates them.
They capture an insane energy level and every track that they release seems to be like a little bit of an evolution for the band. A step in a new direction but just slightly. This lets them push the envelope and push themselves to really release music that will always be fresh, will always hit hard, and have as much passion as the last one did.
They are amazing in terms of creating riffs and the vocal approach is always outstanding. Even with this song, by the time you get to the middle and end of the song, there are layers of these vocals everywhere and it just helps build the intensity of the whole song.
This track has layers to it and it's really easy to get wrapped up in everything. They know how to create a complete atmosphere with their songs.
I would fully suggest listening to their previous single "Antidote" after you dive through this one and then keep going back through some of their other releases. They're all more than worth your time.
Check out "Sunflower" as an introduction to the band if you don't know them yet.
Remember where you heard it first.
