A new release from Mitch Zorn delivers a soulful kind of warmth and in doing so he can embody this character that you end up relating to because of this honest approach lyrically.
That combination of the honest approach and the warmth of the song in its tonality is part of what makes this song so impactful in a way.
"Back To You" has a rich combination of what I would consider to be Americana and this soul and contemporary pop tone which work together extremely well because of his vocal delivery being so passionate a lot of the time.
There's something sort of poppy about the track as well. It has this pop coating to an extent and the melodies are colorful and catchy while they're being delivered with that level of soul which makes for something memorable.
You can tell that this track certainly came from someplace real and served as a kind of chapter in his life to an extent. This builds on that personality and that character I mentioned earlier.
This has some inventive approaches to its performance and songwriting and there's something so familiar about it as well.
It's hard to put your finger on but it feels like a song you've been listening to for years.
Perhaps it's influenced by not only classic Americana but classic '80s and '90s contemporary pop music which is why it's got that sort of warmth to it.
You can hear layers of guitars going on as the track unfolds and some of those serve as ambient notes that float through the ether of the song and give it a bit of an atmosphere while others bring a slight southern twang that comes back to the Americana approach.
It's all done with a lot of attention to how the song would feel aesthetically so you can get into the pace and groove while still feeling like you are afloat with the ambiance of it.
You can tell there's a bit of emotional backbone here as well, so you get a cinematic sense when you listen to the track, and I love that about the song because that emotional push helps you relate to it and connect with it.
Now, as I talk about the warmth of the song, I don't just mean the guitar work and the overall aesthetic, the vocals are really what give the most warmth of all.
The tone of his voice feels welcoming strangely and you can't turn away from it once he starts singing.
You can also hear classic country influences being weaved in and out of the song so you can tell that that southern tonality is coming from some of the country artists he must have listened to growing up and that shines through in different parts of the song.
The most important thing about this to me is that honesty and the soul of it all. It's got that soul because it speaks truths and gives off that wonderful character, so you know that he's giving a little piece of himself in this track and that is important.
It's got a beautiful energy to it all around and it's a song that has a strange way of just sticking with you for quite some time after it has already ended.
There are certain addictive elements about it.
This was a very well-woven single and performed with plenty of heart that all let his presence as an artist really shine through and with its release, we decided to speak to him about it all to find out where this may have come from and what might be coming next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Hello Mitch and thank you for taking some time with us! "Back To You" was such a soulful track and those vocals really hit hard!! Can you tell us where this song came from?
Thanks for having me! Honestly, I wish I could say it was a real story, but I just had the idea that I wanted to write a slower more soul/blues driven track and I kind of got lucky with the melody it more or less fell out of the sky.
Buzz Slayers: I can hear a few different approaches here. Can you give us some of your top musical influences that really changed you?
As far as country guys Eric Church is number one for me, he's such a good
songwriter and his styles and sounds are so diverse I’ve always looked up to him.
Buzz Slayers: Do you often draw from your life experiences when writing songs?
I think for the most part I do and I’m just trying to tell my story but there
are times like this song for example where I’m more focused on the
craft of it and just writing the best song that I can.
Buzz Slayers: Are you already working on any new material as we speak?
Haha yeah, I think I’m getting close to maybe putting out a more full-length project. I've recorded 15 or so songs in the last year that I’m excited about getting out there.
Buzz Slayers: What is next for you as an artist?
Honestly, I just want to play a lot of shows for as many people as possible and put out the best songs that I can.
Buzz Slayers: Who are you listening to right now? Who is in your headphones?
ately I’ve been all over the place, but Hudson Westbrook and Vincent Mason are a couple newer guys that I’ve been listening to a ton lately
Buzz Slayers: Can you tell us a bit about the Off The Record Tour?
Yeah, it was such a good time! Dillon James and Allison Daniels are so talented and such good people, those were my first shows out east and the people that came out were really kind to us and receptive and I can’t wait to do it again.
Buzz Slayers: Is there anything you would like to express or say to fans of the music?
Thank you for following me on this journey and connecting with the music,
there' so much to come and that's the reason I do it!
Buzz Slayers: What a gorgeous song and thank you for taking your time to do this!
