A brand-new release from Kacey Fifield delivers a refreshing and edgy pop soundscape that also boasts chunks of the artist's personality as she gives catchy vocal melodies and strong choruses throughout the track and all the while bears that character that you end up really getting attached to.
"Dream Girl" is a youthful pop banger and its edginess comes mostly from the kind of soundscape and textures that are used throughout the song itself.
There are parts where her vocals feel like they have a little distortion or fuzz tone on them and the synth that's used in the track is really edgy and hard hitting as well giving the whole thing a bit of a drive but that is in combination with a sort of bubbly and vivacious color so you get this blend of something that's very catching very addictive but also packs a bit of a punch and I certainly enjoy those aspects.
One of the coolest things about this track is how it somehow blends a sort of old school pop approach with that new and current, edgy pop Style as well because those two things go together like peanut butter and jelly when it's done right and it's certainly done right here because the song has a super radio friendly feel, her presence as an artist really shines on this one, and you're able to sing along with the track by the last chorus.
This is one of those songs that ends up sticking in your head for a very long time after it's ended and the only way to say she ate that is to go and listen to it again which in my opinion is smart song writing, but I think Kacey just naturally writes this way because That's how she likes them.
There's a great bounce and sort of groove to this track and it does have a high energy, and sort of explosive pop approach that showcases her ability to write long lasting hooks but still give all of that personality into a song that you can dance to all night long.
This was an incredibly memorable and fun single and upon listening to it it does make you want to take a little bit of a deeper dive into Kacey's back catalog which is something that I did and I'm glad too because upon doing so I found an absolutely massive amount of singles starting from 2015 and back then, she was just a kid so to listen to her evolution as a songwriter and as a person throughout these releases was outstanding and it's definitely something I think you should do.
Kacey Fifield certainly not new to the game and this release is just the latest in her long string of musical endeavors and the whole thing made us want to have a quick sit down with the artist to find out where this track came from and also what might be coming up next for her.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Okay Kacey let's start with "Dreamgirl"! This track seemed pretty personal! How did this come about?
The song was inspired by an idea I had back in August of last year about a "dream girl" who seems perfect on the surface but is actually driving herself crazy just to fit that mold. In the studio with my co writers Sam Beresford and Michael Kamerman, as soon as we started coming up with the chorus chord progression, the lyrics "so unwell, I get possessive and I lose myself" came to me with the melody. Building on that melody idea and thinking back to the concept I came up with in August, we shaped the rest of the song to show the contrast between being a supposedly picture-perfect dream girl and the consequences of changing yourself to fit that beauty standard. I always love a super fun, upbeat pop song with a deeper meaning hidden behind the earworm melody.
Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you musically?
I've always loved telling stories: I grew up recreating scenes from my favorite TV shows, writing my own scripts, and improvising one-woman musicals for my family. My childhood iPad is filled with videos of me singing songs I made up about my toys, friends, and family. Since then, I've truly grown to love songwriting as a form of self-expression and a method of connecting with others through shared feelings and experiences.
Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?
I'm super inspired by my life and everyone around me, so it really depends on the song! For example, "Self Sabotage" is inspired by the situation between one of my best friends and her ex while "Left Behind" is about the anxiety I felt during my senior year of high school. The new release "Dream Girl" is definitely inspired by my own experiences, but also influenced by observations I've made about people trying to change themselves to get their crush to like them or to fit the ever-changing beauty standard.
Buzz Slayers: This release has some great approaches to it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?
There are so so many! I love Lorde, she’s an all-time favorite of mine. I also love Charli XCX, Conan Gray, Troye Sivan, Gracie Abrams, Clairo, Maude Latour, Maisie Peters, BORNS, and a ton more. Those are definitely my favorite pop artists, but my taste is all over the place: I listen to rap by artists like Childish Gambino, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar as well as The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, Green Day, and a bunch more rock bands. I’d say my influences come from all over the different eras of music I love listening to!
Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?
I love spending time with my family, friends, and 4 rescue cats! I also enjoy going to the gym, running, reading books, taking dance classes, trying new recipes, going rock climbing, and putting on my "film critic" hat to review the newest movies on my Letterboxd.
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
Along with the rest of the world, I've been listening to a ton of Chappell Roan recently! I've been listening to her for two years so it's incredible seeing how she's been blowing up recently. I love her songwriting style and the entire grandiose nature of her music and persona. I got to see her live for the first time at Coachella this year and that performance got me so hooked on her newest release, "Good Luck, Babe!"
Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?
Yes, I'm performing live at The Mint LA on August 14th at 8:30 pm! Anyone in Los Angeles should stop by for a super fun show (and the "Dream Girl" live debut). I'm working on scheduling some shows for my East Coast friends, so stay tuned!
Buzz Slayers: Do you record at a big studio, or do you have a home studio set-up?
I have a small home studio set-up, but I typically prefer recording in the studio with my producers/co writers! It's super helpful to have a mic at home though - it makes it easy to record quick demos when I get inspired late at night!
Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
I’m always working on new music so of course there’s more in the works! I can’t make any promises about a release date, but I’m working on some music that feels like the best I’ve ever made so I can’t wait to share more with the world.
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
Thank you so much for your support! It truly means the world to me :) I can't wait to hear what you think of "Dream Girl!"
