An Interview With Chelsea Valentine

A brand new single release from Chelsea Valentine takes the form of a colorful and ambient pop soundscape that comes through with a lot of honesty and in doing so shows tons of character and presents along with the performance that lets the song feel like you've been listening to it on the radio for a while,

"Forever" is loaded with swells and sways that let the song really breathe and feel alive which is something that's quite refreshing especially when it comes to pop music of the style because we don't get that often.

You can tell the song is genuine and comes from a place of personal experience which also makes it very relatable but this song has such a beautiful array of vastness and pop textures that melt into each other and in the end, you have a hook that sticks with you for a while after the song has ended.

The only way to satiate this is to listen to the song again and to me that's just smart songwriting but I think for Chelsea this comes naturally.

Her ability to put off a balanced delivery dynamically is really impressive because she's got great energy on the track and that Persona shines but there's also a sort of calmness as well that comes with the song and that may come from the music but it definitely has helped by the alluring vocal approach that she gives.

I think this track has some outstanding production and it's one of the things that makes it so addictive. You get this wave of sonic energy that kind of flows over you in a state of relaxation in a strange way but you also find yourself paying attention to the lyrics and you get the sense that this is a love song that comes from a place of Peace almost.

A lot about this song was performed gracefully and with taste, so you have this feeling that it gives off which gives you a sense of youth and young love, but you also get this strange sense of maturity as well in the songwriting itself so the blend of those two things creates an atmosphere that's very difficult to turn away from.

No matter what you can clearly tell this is coming from an artist that has a true love for her craft and although she pays attention to a lot of the detail and intricacies of the song, and never loses that heart it was built from in the first place and I think that's the most important aspect.

With the release of such a well woven single, we wanted to have a sit down with Chelsea Valentine to see where this track actually came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Okay, let's start with "Forever"! This track was warming and had a great pop color to it that made it cinematic and honest! How did this release come about?

This release was super unexpected and in the best way possible! I released my third song called On The Line back in March of this year and I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to work on next. Then Charlotte Adelle, who is the producer, and I started chatting one day and decided to book in a writing session together to just have fun. I did say on the day that I wanted to write a love song but something that was light. And then we spent the rest of the day writing ‘Forever’. We had so much fun writing and creating that day that I wasn’t even thinking about releasing. But I then spent the next couple of weeks thinking about it and having it randomly pop into my head that I was like why not make it my fourth release!

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?

I came to this a lot later in my life. While music has always played a role- I learnt Volin growing up and dj’ed in my late teens/early twenties. I never really saw myself as an artist and honestly, most days that’s still true. And then it wasn’t until 2019 when I was recovering from a concussion that I started writing ‘stuff’, whether that was ideas or lyrics or just nonsense really. Over 2020 and 2021, I wanted to write and learn as much as possible which led to me releasing my first song in 2022 and that’s kind of been the journey so far!

Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?

Definitely love, friendships and connections. I think that’s what makes life interesting. And that can come from anywhere and everywhere. It might be my own personal journey and life, or it might be hearing stories from friends, or it could be from books, tv shows and movies. I love to be open and take inspiration from all parts of life.

Buzz Slayers: This single has some great approaches to it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?

There are so many! I think I have this mix of pop with country as well as 80’s synth vibe that I love. I love Tears For Fears, Olivia Rodrigo, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, Kelsea Ballerini, Stevie Nicks, Maisie Peters, Sabrina Carpenter too. That is the one thing I love about music. It can change and grow with you.

Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

I would call myself a homebody so I would probably be at home, chilling with my fiancé and cat haha. Probably reading and journalling about my thoughts and feelings as well as re-watching my favourite shows. I also love going out and trying a new restaurant. That is probably the wildest thing I do haha.

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

Get Him Back – Olivia Rodrigo,

Wild as Her – Corey Kent

Positive Spin – Gretta Ray

Cold Hard Truth- Dulcie

Sinner – The Last Dinner Party

Nothing in This World- Paris Hilton

Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?

I don’t have anything in the works right now. I also have massive stage fright haha. It’s something I need to work on. I think that was a big reason for why I didn’t want to release anything but then I thought fuck it, I love to create so just do it.

Buzz Slayers: Do you record these at a big studio or do you have a home studio set-up?

I have never recorded in a big studio. I mean that would be a super cool experience to have one day! I have recorded stuff at home in my closet which is how most of Wire’s vocals were recorded. I do enjoy going to a small studio as well. It can give you a completely different energy which can add to the project.

Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

Definitely more music! I’m heading back into the studio soon to write and create more which is super exciting. Maybe an EP for 2024?!... But who knows! I love being a little bit mysterious and keeping people guessing. Maybe that’s the Aquarius in me.

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

Hi! My name is Chelsea Valentine! I’m an artist from Australia who loves to write about all things love and connections. If anything, I want to show people that you can create at any age. It’s all fun and love here and if you want, feel free to join the ride!
