The latest album release from SILENT-K delivers a massively refreshing combination of rock approaches that come through in a rambunctious soiree that hits hard but still blends elements of color and edginess together to give off this excitable and addictive energy that sticks solid throughout the entire record.
The Wonky Punk album does indeed involve certain elements of punk rock, but it also brings in garage, fuzz tone, funk, classic rock, '80s pop, new wave, and more and this is all because of their combination of influences, songwriting approaches, and instrumentation used.
Some of the synth tones really push a few of these tracks and have that colorful and experimental side of things which is a huge aspect of the record itself because it is indeed outside the box and built with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
The vocals at times are incredibly animated and really helped drive the record in terms of that almost wild vibe. Everyone seems to follow suit. The entire band and all of its players and instruments really have performances that are a bit wild, and you can tell that they're having a ball doing this entire thing.
I think the most important aspect of the entire album, to me anyway, is this insane and electric energy that it delivers because this is also a huge pinnacle of how the songs are coming through aesthetically.
It almost gives the vibe of a live performance and perhaps these songs were actually recorded in a live setting and all the players involved were feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
That's exactly what it feels and sounds like to me but of course I wasn't there so I could be completely wrong about that aspect.
Even if that's so, listening to the record really does make you want to see these guys perform it live in your face because if you can capture this kind of energy on record, then seeing them live must be a fun, face-melting experience.
The guitar tones can change from song to song giving more of an experimental and almost psychedelic rock approach. The bass lines on certain tracks are super imperative and really lets everything hold together perfectly. The whole thing is done in a way that each player almost leans on the next so that you can hear their love for the craft.
When I say that, I don't just mean playing instruments or singing. I mean writing songs together that have a fun impact and letting it all come together to be one wild ride.
That combination of almost 80s, new wave-style pop, and this newer garage rock approach really hits hard in certain tracks, and I do indeed hear how heavily the band's presence shines through on those tracks but, the album is indeed eclectic at times and certainly holds more than a few surprises around its corners.
This is definitely the album you listen to as a whole. You can't just listen to a few tracks because then you won't get a sense for what the whole album actually spans.
There are a lot of textures and layers to this record that were well thought out, amazingly performed, and well-arranged but again, it is the delivery and the actual performance that really drives this record through the roof.
Everything from indie and bedroom pop to classic and indie rock, vintage punk and garage, and so much more, all rolled up into one massive album.
This was like a rock and pop weekend bender and it's a party that you don't want to end because it's so much damn fun.
The performances by all parts give the record a particular aesthetic that makes you want to get up and dance, sing along, or just simply jump around the room.
Either way, there's something for almost everyone here and a lot of it is super infectious because it's got this, sort of, heart to it and I love that Vibe and feeling.
After listening to the full album, I can totally understand how Wonky Punk is a damn near-perfect title this release.
I've never called anything wonky before in my life, but this certainly feels a little wonky.
It's avant-garde, and charismatic, it has personality, addictive energy, smart songwriting, and a wonderfully vivacious approach performance-wise that all come together to build an atmosphere you end up never wanting to leave.
Don't just take my word for it though, have a listen to this record from beginning and if you can and don't be afraid to turn it up.
Remember where you heard it first.
