The latest single from Meg Cannon delivers a beautiful brand of honesty that comes through with a lush character that is something we can all not only get attached to but relate to, especially in the way that she describes the situation.
"Wine Gone Bad" gets pretty in-depth into a relationship ending and looking back at certain aspects of it gives her that bitter aftertaste.
I think it's the way that she articulates her wording and lyrical phrasing that really grabs at you because she's very descriptive with things and that's part of what makes it so understandable and so relatable. A lot of us have been in similar situations and don't really know how to articulate our inner thoughts or emotions the way that Meg does on this track but when you hear it it's something that connects with you.
It feels almost like this could have been pretty cathartic for Meg to write and release and she is most certainly giving a little piece of herself during this track which I find very refreshing because not enough artists do that these days.
This was a very smooth-feeling contemporary pop single that also gives elements of other genres from R&B to Americana but those are all just hinted at. This is a pop single that beckons certain kinds of heartbreak tracks from the mid to late 90s and I love that factor because she's blending old school with new school songwriting approaches to give you something familiar and warm, but also new.
The whole track gives you a sense of authenticity because you just know it came from someplace real. This is from life experience, and it has plenty of well-thought-out emotional drive that comes through passionately in this song and the soundscape of it all feels thick. There's no empty space and there's no hidden meaning.
Everything's right there out in the open not just lyrically, but musically as well and that works hand in hand.
Part of the beauty of a song like this is not just the fact that you can connect with it, but also the way it's put together and built musically. There are layers of textures that sit atop each other and create an atmosphere that you end up falling right into.
By the end of it, you get washed away with everything and I think that's part of the point of the song as well.
This is a song with heart, and it means something to the artist and each person that listens to it may take it slightly differently. For each person who hears the song, different memories may pop into their head.
The beauty of songs like this is how you take them in but for Meg, this needed to be let go of so, she did that in the best way she knew how. She put it into a song and let it out into the open.
A beautiful showcasing of artistry that comes from her inner self and gives you a story that isn't new by any means, but it is genuine.
I also love how the song feels a little bit cinematic as well. You can hear this track in the scene of a film or movie. This also comes from that emotional drive of course but it's just done so well.
Her vocal performances are beautiful and you get a lot of two part harmonies that again, sort of build on this big atmosphere and this track has a way of swimming around in the air that surrounds you.
A wonderfully woven single from Meg Cannon, "Wine Gone Bad" gives you a little insight to how she's affected and by life, and how she's able to string that into a wonderful piece of music that gives something not only to herself but to the listener as well.
Take a listen to this song as soon as you can and see how it affects you. It certainly affected me.
Remember where you heard it first.
