An album release from Beast Parade has such an outstanding array of genre-bending approaches that the record is just bursting with surprises at every corner, and this is something I absolutely adore about it because by the time you get halfway through, you begin to expect the unexpected.
The Nightmares album features everything from cinematic synth music to indie rock, alternative rock, disco rock, and so much more all rolled into one fat record that has these amazing layers and diverse songwriting approaches.
Some tracks have tremolo-effected guitars and feel like you're walking through a cinematic wasteland of Sonic textures that flow and swim around in the air surrounding you all as a story is being told lyrically.
Songs like that have a lot to soak in but it's so much fun to do exactly that.
Other songs focus more on pop rock with bright chord progressions and vibrant approaches that feel like they were recorded live on the floor, and everyone involved was feeding you off each other's energies the entire time.
Then, you get elements of progressive alternative rock with outstanding arrangements and these deepening layers but also with this colorful pop overcoat as well.
This is something I need to touch on also. This whole record, as diverse as it is, all has a way of blending the color and edginess together to create something that's very unique in its own right.
The album has its own atmosphere, and I can tell you right now that this is one of those records you listen to from beginning to end.
Listening to one or two tracks off of this record will not even give you an idea of what the record has to offer as a whole and if you do listen to the entire thing, you get pulled away from whatever you're doing and put into this whole other world for a little bit.
The record is almost like an escape. The songs serve almost like chapters of a book in a strange way as well.
I love the way everything is laid out here.
So, this is a 6-track record but it's almost 35 minutes long, so it is still considered an album.
Out of those six tracks, you have a group of them that are over 6 minutes in length, and this gives you an idea of how in-depth these tracks can get.
All the elements are prominent here. The guitars are outstanding, the synths and keys are really well performed when they're on a track, and the baselines at times make the entire song so, there are a lot of performances and elements of these songs that push the others or, I should say compliment the others.
You can also hear elements of psychedelic and experimental rock all over this record. Actually, the whole record is kind of experimental if you ask me.
This is a perfect example of an album that was built and designed with fewer boundaries than the norm. None of the stuff is really conforming to a particular genre and the songs still have loads of catchiness, hooks, and melodies with sections that stick in your brain for hours or days after the songs have ended.
It's a rock record. There's a bunch of different kinds of rock here and they just created their own way of mending those together which in turn kind, builds that atmosphere and it's something that's unique.
The vocals throughout the entire project help push the boundaries here as well. The character behind the vocals adapts to each track and adds to the drive of these songs a lot of the time.
I would suggest listening to this record with headphones on or, at least doing it loud.
Remember where you heard it first.
