An Alluring and Edgy Release from Marie-Thérèse

Updated: 3 days ago

A new release from Marie-Thérèse takes a classic '80s funk and rock banger and brings it into a completely different light while somehow remaining so true to the original that you can feel the same vibes emanating from this version all with a bit of her own personality embedded.

Her cover of "Strange Relationship", originally by Prince, is an outstanding ode to the artist while mending her own unique approach to the track itself by adding personal touches and slight changes but what gets you is how hard-hitting this track comes through with colorful but still edgy tonality and this very alluring feel.

The track comes through with a cross between that old school approach and soundscape but brought into a new and current platform by way of adding in a different sort of pop approach and it really works like a charm because not only does it have this forward moving flow to it, but it also has an incredibly danceable backbone.

This track is a unique interpretation of the original version and again, it does hold true to that original while taking steps in different directions to make things refreshed and edgy in different ways. The attitude is on point but still a little bit different, the undertone still has funk, but it's coated in a vivacious pop texture.

For me, this was an outstanding performance by all involved simply because I'm a fan of Prince as many of us are or at least should be. You can clearly tell that this is an absolute love letter to the artist and how he changed her life musically.

Attempting an endeavor like covering a Prince song is no easy feat. For a lot of artists, it would seem impossible, but Marie-Thérèse pulls this off as if it were completely natural to her.

I think that's part of why this comes through so impactful. It's got such a particular aesthetic to it and she's really taking a classic track that a lot of us grew up with and made it all her own in a way.

You get an almost live performance vibe from the track, especially in terms of energy because it's completely electric from beginning to end.

The song is riddled with different guitar tones, some serving as Rhythm for the verses and others for a more rock backbone giving the song a vast undertone. The keys and synth textures are absolutely perfect to portray this version of the song. And of course, her vocal approach is alluring and sensual in a way, so it really pulls you in and makes things sort of glamorous or luxurious.

It's got this particular kind of class to it that comes through and really lets her presence as an artist shine.

I adore the kind of punch that this track boasts and that balance between the glamorous and the edge of the attitude and the color, the textures and the tones. It all delivers an atmosphere and once you're there, you just don't want to leave.

Upon listening to this track, I took a little bit of a deep dive into the artists' catalog on Spotify and came across two singles released previously, both delivering and showing different sides of her Artistry and influences.

You can hear classic rock, punk, garage rock, and a certain kind of grittiness and almost blues attitude on some of these.

Marie-Thérèse is truly an artist with many influences musically, and you can tell she gives pieces of herself in her music and manages to intertwine and infuse those influences into those songs as well and she does an outstanding job of delivering something unique and approachable.

I suggest not only checking this single out but listening to her two previous singles "Luna" and "Saint Mary".

She is also planning her next original single release as we speak.

Remember where you heard it first.
