A new album release from Joe Kelly & The Royal Pharmacy delivers a robust, warm, charismatic, vivacious, and welcoming record that brings together elements of soul, Americana, rock, and a lot of personality, which is one of the biggest things you end up loving about the release.
The Cast Me Down album leaves no stone unturned in terms of pushing boundaries and dropping songs that have impact with belting and soulful vocals at times that leave their mark, managing to tell stories from a spirited perspective, which all pulls you in.
The level of soul in the vocal performance, along with the band, is all incredible. You can tell they have a real love for their craft and writing songs together that are robust and full-bodied with lush instrumentation, progressive and warm tonalities, and lyrics that put you in the moment.
The record wastes no time coming in strong with the first track, "200 Years", and letting this be one hell of an introduction to the record as a whole.
I think this is a great intro song simply because it presents a number of the staples that you actually do here throughout the record's unfolding.
powerful vocals, heart, organs that fill the song's ether with thickness, slightly outside the box and envelope-pushing production approach, and the ability to pack a punch while still being somewhat vulnerable.
This is a big aspect of the entire record. It has those levels of vulnerability on different songs, but it also manages to have edginess along with the warmth and color it delivers.
The energy levels are amazing and also fluctuate along with the intensities throughout the record. Some of the songs feel almost like they're recorded live on the floor, and everyone involved was feeding off each other's energies the entire time.
These songs feel alive and breathing in their own way, and it's something that really creates an atmosphere that's all its own.
The record is one of those releases you should listen to all the way through.
Listening to the first few tracks can give you an idea or a little bit of a feel for what you can expect from the record; however, those songs alone do not give you the full spectrum of what the album has to offer.
There are plenty of surprises around the corner, and even if I'm wrong about the whole recording live on the floor aspect, hearing the songs on record and how they capture that energy and aesthetic so well makes you want to go see them perform them live in your face.
I have to love a band that I hear on record and immediately know they're going to be amazing in a live performance setting.
This was an immense album with loads of gorgeous textures, instrumentation, riddled with character and soul, and really just hit me perfectly.
This is the kind of record you could listen to while shooting whiskey and really soak it in.
I love that blend of classic rock, Americana, hints of straight up country, roots folk, and everything else that's rolled into this one fat album.
There's pretty much something for everyone here.
Take a deep dive into this album as soon as you can, and again, I suggest going from start to finish. Listen to this record from front to back because that's what it was meant for.
It may not be a full-on concept record, but at times it feels like the songs interconnect with each other, and again, you want to pick up on all the elements and approaches that the album delivers as a whole.
It's well worth your time.
Check this out right now and remember where you heard it first.
