Smooth Retsina Glow return with a bit of a new approach and the ability to bend and mend genres at free will as the record comes across with a gorgeous and lush set of tracks that span everything from classic rock to a vast and expansive indie rock along with elements of dream, and so much more. Able to take a bit of a musical journey with the band and I feel like this works incredibly well for the record because these songs are a bit of storytelling while also coming from personal perspectives and this all lets you get wrapped up in everything the record has to offer.
The Through the Needles Eye album has layers to it. And this is one of the most fun aspects of it. The layers are really exciting to peel back, and I don't just mean lyrically. I mean musically as well as there are so many wonderful and textual approaches guitar-wise throughout this album's unfolding that it's very easy to get engulfed in the entire thing and just let it take you wherever it goes.
One of my favorite aspects about the spark is the simple fact that it's able to combine those genres so incredibly well while sticking to that rock undertone.
There is almost always an expansive feeling and underbelly to the entire record, and this is something that I enjoyed because that's where the sort of dreaming comes in.
There are definitely songs that have unique time signatures, and again, the guitar work across the record is a key factor in how the whole thing comes across because there are different approaches and tones to how the guitars are tracked.
I feel like performance-wise this was incredible, and it most certainly does indeed feel like it was all recorded live on the floor so that everyone involved was just feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
Those energy levels and that live performance sort of quality is really what pushes the envelope and lets the record come through alive and breathing and its own way.
We're not strangers to this band. However, I can't tell you this record is a little bit different, and you can hear some of that Evolution as a band in the songs themselves.
The vocals are lusher and more soulful. The whole album has again, more of that expansive undertone that creates an atmosphere that pulls you into it.
I totally dig a record that's got its own atmosphere the way that this one does and believe me, once you're in that atmosphere, you simply don't want to leave because the whole record serves as this incredible sort of escape that pulls you away from wherever you are and whatever you doing and puts you in a whole other world for a moment in time.
Now, some songs have a straight, more hard rock kind of feel to them with heavier and more distorted guitars. Some tracks have amazing effects on those guitars like delays, reverbs, choruses, and more that all add that lusciousness and sort of full body thickness to the songs but also are the things that help build that atmosphere as well.
This record has a very particular soundscape to it, and it's built with attention to detail but also it has a soul.
This was a gorgeous record and again, you should listen to the whole thing because only then will you get the full spectrum of what the album has to offer.
With the release of the album, we had a sit-down, video interview with guitarist and songwriter Colin Wolf who helped us really understand where this record came from and all the attributes of how it was built along with some history of the band and more.
Check out this interview below and definitely have a good hard listen to Through the Needles Eye because it's well worth your time.
