A new single release from Isaac Sloane & The Sound Brigade brings out a soul rock powerhouse with a lush set of instrumentation that really thickens the vibe and soundscape of the entire thing but, also brings forth this immense energy that gives the air of a live performance and let the song hit with a colorful tonality.
"Blow Your Cover" is riddled with character in its own way and I really enjoy how you have this element of funk, classic rock, indie rock, soul, and so much more all rolled into this one track that comes through with that impactful and electric approach along with something I feel like has been missing in rock music for quite some time; musical hooks.
Yes, this track has tons of hooks and a chorus that hits hard just the way it should. However, it also has loads of musical hooks all over it, and I feel like that's an imperative part of the song's aesthetic.
There are loads of songs with great choruses out there and those tend to be very memorable parts of songs for the most part but, back in the day when classic rock thrived at its best, musical hooks, particularly guitar hooks, were as prevalent as the choruses are.
This track has a guitar hug that also follows along with horn sections so the musical hook on this track is bountiful and full-bodied with this vibrancy that comes through and lets the entire band's presence shine.
One of the other things that really grabbed my attention with this track is the percussion or the drumming. The drummer really lets this entire song hit a deep-rooted groove which is super important for a song like this because it's danceable. It does keep to that classic rock feel which is very groove-based so, the drama lets everything feel super in the pocket but also alive and breathing.
There are all kinds of fun and excitable fills that are done percussion-wise, and I feel like the drums really add a lot of that drive that helps push the entire song to where it needs to be.
Not only was this track incredibly addictive but as I mentioned earlier, it has this aesthetic and feel of a live performance, almost as if the track was recorded live on the floor and everyone involved was just feeding off of each other's energy the entire time.
This really pushes the song even further. Even if I'm wrong about the whole live-on-the-floor recording aspect, listening to this song makes you want to go see the band perform it live in your face simply because if the energy is captured this well on record, then seeing it live must be awesome.
You can hear these different musical influences coming through with different sections and parts of the song especially because it's got that big, lush horn section that comes in and out bringing that southern soul to a classic rock vibe.
The vocals are outstanding and match the energy, soul, color, and charisma of the rest of the band perfectly. Everything is on the same level of intensity which lets the song pack a punch in the best way possible.
After listening to this single, I decided to take a deep dive into the band's back catalog on Spotify. I'm certainly glad that I did because they do have a whole live album that was released this year, and even more recently than this single was.
The ISSB Live at Harvest House does an amazing job of showcasing exactly what these guys can do live, and I was absolutely right to think that it would be wonderfully vivacious and spirited.
The band also has some other releases that really took me by surprise like a record from 2022 that is a five-track EP and does an amazing job of also showing some different sides of how the band does their thing. If you listen to everything, then you get a feel for the evolution of their music from the get-go.
When I find a band I enjoy, listening to all their stuff is a really fun experience because again, hearing the evolution of where a band starts, to where they end up, is an amazing thing.
I would highly suggest checking out not only the single but also listening to a lot of their back catalog, especially that new live record.
Listen to it with headphones on because it's one of the best ways to soak it in and remember where you heard it first.
