A single release from Upwood Avenue comes through riddled with character as the song unfolds into a story that a lot of us can relate to quite a bit and it's all delivered with this almost theatrical undertone that beckons a classic rock approach with pianos, organs, rock guitars, and vocals that keep the song super dynamically balanced.
"Sunday Morning Fight (About Saturday Night)" is a song that obviously gives quite a bit of insight just from the title alone but the way it unfolds is really what grabs you and the lyrics tell the story with enough detail to leave room for the imagination but also for you to know what's going on and that's something that reminds me of reading a good book for example where there's detail but there's still room for your imagination to let everything take shape and I love pieces of art like this one because it's fun.
There's a certain kind of jazz groove that this track has and reminds me of bands like the doors at times which is where the classic rock element kicks in, but it's got a unique approach, and it also touches on some of that blues rock which lets everything in the song kind of complement each other instrument-wise.
This is one of those songs where the whole thing creates an atmosphere for you to fall into and it's very easy to get a little bit engulfed by this track but it's also a really enticing single.
One of my favorite elements about this is the way things are layered because you have the guitars, you have the vocals, the bass, and the keys but what really creates this sort of vast feel are the organs which are constant throughout the song and really give it that depth but also have a strange way of giving it some drive as well.
There's something about this that's again theatrical but also a bit cinematic and there are parts of the song that make you feel like this may have been recorded live to an extent where the players are just feeding off of each other the whole time giving off this energy that becomes quickly infectious.
Of course, I could be wrong about the whole alive on the floor aspect but, either way, listening to this track definitely makes you want to go see them perform live because if this kind of energy is captured on record, then seeing it live would be even more fun.
Some of the song gives off the feeling of a kind of Noir underbelly like there's an air of mystery involved that has a lot to do with that sort of '70s tone and key performance.
I definitely dig that aspect as well but all in all, this was a really fun song that combined personality and character with a little bit of edginess and storytelling so that you have something you can really grab on to.
A little bit of a deep dive into the band's back catalog and I'm certainly glad that I did because they have a handful of other singles that all speak volumes for the band themselves and each one of these shows a little bit of a different side to not only the character of the band but the songwriting approaches as well.
If you dig this single which I'm sure you will, I will strongly suggest listening to some of their previous releases starting with a song also released earlier this year called "Two Souls" as that one really impressed me.
I would suggest listening to all these songs with headphones on so you could really soak in the atmosphere that these guys managed to deliver and remember where you heard it first.
