A new album release from Jennifer Tefft & The Strange delivers a robust honesty and the form of rock singles that each give a little bit of a different side personality-wise along with songwriting-wise as the record ranges from a southern undertone rock approach to a heavier more alternative rock, classic rock, and so much more in between but it's all done with this character that you end up holding on to.
The Strange Beginnings album gives off that personal approach lyrically as Jennifer belts out inner thoughts and emotionally driven lyrics and at times it feels like the songs interconnect almost like a concept album.
What I know for sure is that a lot of these songs serve as chapters in her life and this is one of the reasons that you should be listening to the record from beginning to end.
The other reason is simply because if you check out one or two songs from this record then you're getting nowhere near the full spectrum of what the album has to offer as a whole.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these tracks have that southern almost Americana rock feel to them filled with organs more twangy style guitar tones, and even a southern vocal approach at times but some of the other ones just have a straighter rock vibe and tonality to them so that combination shows around it a set of influences that brought this whole thing together musically.
Either way, these songs come through as a bit heavy and a bit hard when they want to and this gives the songs an added drive but it's all sewn together by those vocals.
This is a very ethnic feeling record and again, there's definitely emotional drive behind a lot of these tracks so the musical performance is punchy and hard-hitting with a robust and lush feel and so the vocals really need to match that kind of style as well if the songs are going to come through with the aesthetic they were meant to.
Jennifer doesn't only match the energy of the music, but she enhances everything, so the music compliments the vocals and vice versa.
This was a huge record to me, and I love that she's not afraid to speak her mind so that you get pieces of her with some of these songs because that's an important thing when you're listening to someone new.
When you're singing songs about real things, it's got to come through authentically and when you listen to this record you know that it is.
That to me is important because it builds on that character that the record boasts.
This album did have a good amount of that classic rock influence in its veins and a lot of that came through, but it just did so with a little bit of an edgier punch.
You can still tell that that classic rock was a major influence on Jennifer and the band.
The energy levels in general across this record are outstanding and it's to the point where you feel like some of the songs were recorded live on the floor and everyone involved was just feeding off of each other the entire time.
Even if I'm wrong about the whole live-on-the-floor aspect, listening to the record makes you want to go see them perform it live in your face. If they can pull off this kind of energy on record then seeing them live must be amazing.
I love listening to an album and getting the vibe of a live band because it just gives everything more power.
There were definitely layers that you can peel back throughout the unfolding of this record, and I think that some of this may have been cathartic for Jennifer to write and release while for the listener, it was super relatable, and other times I feel like she just let loose and had fun with everything letting her colors and presents as an artist shine.
This was an impactful rock release that gave a lot more than just pure raw rock energy although it certainly had that as well.
You can definitely get attached to that character the record puts out and you can also tell there was a lot of attention to detail put into the creation of the album but it never loses the heart that it begins with in the first place and that may be the most important aspect of the entire thing.
Either way, check this record out, and again, I urge you to listen to it in full so you can really soak in everything you were meant to.
