A new release from Delphi Ravens brings back their unique blend of Soul, blues, classic, and alternative rock and this new record is a big one that covers a lot of ground and showcases the band's ability to consistently create albums and songs that have an edginess to them but still grab you like a pop song would.
Keeper of Secrets is a record that ranges in intensities and styles. You don't find great piano ballads on rock records all the time, but this album has a track called "Bittersweet" that has theatrical and pop undertones and a piano-driven sound. Although it was surprising to hear, it was so welcoming to me.
Other tracks like "Final Chance" bring out emotionally driven stories and duet-style harmonies that feel like genuine classic rock tracks pushed with acoustic guitars and a heavy-handed percussion.
This is an album that has many surprises around the corner, so I definitely suggest listening to it from beginning to end because even if you listen to a few tracks, you won't get an understanding of the album. You need to hear it all.
There are more than a few surprises throughout this record, along with a fluctuating set of guitar tones that really help create the atmosphere the whole thing delivers.
Vocals are bountiful and robust, delivering plenty of soul, which is a staple feel for this band in general, but they really have a way of hitting hard.
There are plenty of other songs with gorgeous vocal harmonies evoking emotion and feeling along with this energy that feels like you're right there in the room with them watching it be performed in front of you.
"Red to Black" is one of my favorite tracks on the record as it gets descriptive with the lyrics and tells a great story.
This is important; you don't always have a lot of these attributes on one album, but they pulled it off well.
You have catchiness and hooks, not just with the choruses but with the guitars and music. You have lyrics that reach out and grab you, can tell stories or talk about inner thought and emotion delivering lots of feeling. You also have straight rock bangers that hit harder with more edge and power. It all depends on what they feel like doing at the time, and I think it's amazing to have all these styles on one album like this.
One of the best songs on this record is the closing track called "Take My Hand" and this is a song that has a very updated feel. It's very pop-rock but also incorporates string-oriented keys and synths which give it depth and atmosphere.
This is a great closer to the record and also showcases how they can put something together that feels almost dreamy in a sense but then builds in that intensity and becomes bigger later on.
This track starts with a more broken-down approach with focus on the vocals and keys but later brings in drums, guitars, and a bit more.
Of course, the vocals follow suit with that intensity as the band cake that builds into a climactic point and that is memorable.
There are connective tracks, as some of them paint pictures with lyrics and can cause memories of your own to pop into your head at any time.
This was a full-bodied album that offers a lot in terms of eclectic rock songwriting that feels genuine and gives just enough hints of vintage tonality to have it also feel somewhat familiar.
Another amazing record from Delphi Ravens, check out Keeper Of Secrets and remember where you heard it first.
