A new EP release from Grievous Angels brings out a lush blend of reggae, rock, and a well-cultured approach that incorporates some outstanding instrumentation that lets everything blend into each other creating this robust sort of atmosphere for you to step right into, and once you're there, you don't want to leave.
The Sweet Renegades EP spans four songs but within that spectrum you're getting an experimental and almost psychedelic sort of flow and that comes with a lot of color and plenty of character as well which are some of the things that end up becoming most addicting about the record itself.
This release also has a very particular energy to it, almost as if the tracks were recorded live on the floor to some extent and everyone involved was feeding off of each other the entire time.
The tracks seem to breathe and feel alive as they sway and this is something you don't really come across often so when you hear it you know it, and it feels sort of rejuvenating in a way.
The EP has a nearly perfect blend of spacious trippiness and personality, and it takes these cinematic approaches a lot of the time. I'm not sure if that's even done purposely or it's just how they do their thing, but either way, it sounds amazing.
Everything about this record seems so sort of orchestrated but it also feels a bit improvised as well which is something that grabs you, but the whole thing is very engulfing, and you find yourself being wrapped up in the music and then eventually even washed away with it to an extent.
One of my favorite aspects about this whole release is the sheer fact that there is this deep sort of reggae tonality underneath everything and there are also violins strewn throughout the record which adds different sorts of layers to the music itself because a lot of the times the violin is not just sitting up front in the mix.
Half the time the violin tracks are floating through the song's ether or distance in some way and at times it even has certain kinds of effects on it, and this is something that pushes the envelope a little bit in terms of their experimental and their psychedelic approach to how they record their stuff.
These are the attributes that make the record feel alive and that give you surprises around the corners, and this is also something that I've missed in music for quite some time.
If you listen to this full EP, which is exactly what you should be doing, then you will be pulled away from your surroundings because the record has an aspect of escapism so, when it's over, you have to acclimate yourself back to reality again.
What more can you possibly ask for?
Angels is part of an organization called Blacksheep Music Productions which hosts a few different artists and projects all well worth checking out especially if you like this one.
I would strongly suggest listening to this EP from beginning to end because if you only listen to one or two songs then you're not getting the spectrum of what the record actually has to offer in full.
This was a very well-woven record that had plenty of attention to detail but plenty of improvisation, personality, charisma, beautiful energy, and an ethereal sort of underbelly that lets everything move in a natural forward-moving flow.
Take a swim through this record as soon as you can, and I suggest you do it with headphones on so you can hear all the different elements of these songs perfectly.
Remember where you heard it first.
