A new single release from The Innocent Bystanders brings out a classic American and country approach that brings about the feel of a live performance with lush instrumentation and gorgeous vocal harmonies.
"Whiskey & Tears" comes through like an instant classic and certainly feels authentic when you listen to it. The track features beautiful acoustic instruments that sound like both guitars and mandolins, and between those alone, the air gets filled with this colorful and warm atmosphere.
The vocals are constantly delivering memorable melodies that stick with you and also classic country tunes. It's all done with roots and an almost rustic tonality, which I adore because I love vintage Americana and country music in general.
The energy is a big part of why it feels like a live performance. The energy on this record feels like they recorded it live in a room, and the whole thing puts you right there in the moment with them.
I wasn't there, of course, so I'm not sure if that's actually how they recorded it but, when you listen to this track on record, you immediately feel like this band is going to be great to see live simply because of the kind of aesthetic that's captured on the recording.
The lead vocalist has so much soul in her performance that you can't turn away from it. She has some of the classic Dolly Parton style approaches that add beautiful textures to this already full-bodied release.
There's also something incredibly connective about this song. It's a classic track in terms of its lyrical content and talks about missing someone, drinking alone, thinking about them.
You can't get too much more country than that.
You can hear the soul coming through not just vocally but from the whole band and they really come together with a particular tightness but liveliness at the same time.
This is a track that has color, character, charisma, and most importantly, personality, which is one of the things you get attached to right from the get-go.
The drumming is outstanding and really gives the song just a hint of drive which is exactly what it needs to go along with the vocal harmonies and melodies, the softness of the acoustic instrumentation, and the thickness of the bass.
This is one of those tracks where it seems like each player is complementing the next. Each sound and tone compliments the other.
The track honestly did an amazing job of showcasing not only how this band can write classics and perform them with heart but also how they can keep that pop undertone and create something catchy that pops around in your head for hours or even days after the song has ended.
It's a tract that speaks volumes for The Innocent Bystanders, and upon listening to it, I checked out some more of their releases on Spotify.
These guys have a great catalog, including some single releases earlier this year and last, along with a full album in 2021 and plenty more.
Each of their releases showcases a slightly different side of how they do their thing, and they all manage to deliver an amazing presence as a band that still feels almost like live performance, which is just something that becomes a staple of their sound.
I suggest checking out some of their previous releases, especially if you like this single. If you dig this track, you're going to dig them all.
Take a deep dive into this release as soon as you can and see what "Whiskey & Tears" conjures up for you.
Remember where you heard it first.
