A blistering new EP release from Slaughtersun delivers a soiree of metal influences that range from blackened, death, thrash, and more, rolled into one fat record that hits hard but also gives you some vast undertones at times and creates a fiery and hard-hitting atmosphere.
The Black Morrow EP starts with a spacious intro that serves as the calm before the storm before it breaks into a massive riff with the first actual track called "Fall of The Firmament".
This track does an outstanding job of bringing the fire and aggression. The drumming becomes super evident as does the tightness of the whole band, along with their grueling tonality, which is thick but thrashy at the same time.
This track does an amazing job of introducing what you can expect to hear on the rest of the EP however, this is one record you should listen to from beginning to end, especially if you love this kind of metal.
There are a few surprises around the corners and insane riffs that stick in your head for hours after the songs have ended.
Some of these tracks have augmented guitar work and blend in classic thrash and death metal elements with bands like Dillinger Escape Plan. This gives you hints at the many influences these guys take in when creating a record.
A track like "Ready Cell Awaits" is a damn near perfect example of this. The guitar work on this track is rambunctious and wild, bendy and inventive.
There is something about this record that feels almost like it's done live on the floor. It puts you in the moment because the energy is through the roof, and it feels like all the guys are feeding off each other the entire time.
This is also a very intricate record in terms of its arrangements, time signatures, and stops. There is a lot that goes into this kind of songwriting, which people who don't listen to a lot of metal wouldn't understand.
These guys are masters of what they do. They could release a jazz record if they wanted to.
The instrumentation is stellar and these guys put a lot into this record.
The songs are brutal with a heavy-handed sucker punch to the gut each and every time but, with all kinds of that inventive and surprising songwriting throughout the release.
One of my favorite tracks on this record is actually the closing track of the whole EP called "Relentless Thelemic ".
This is a track that states on the record that it was actually recorded live. This blew my mind because of how tight it was and how much it sounded like the rest of the record.
So, even if I'm wrong about the whole release being recorded live on the floor, I know that this track was, and it took me down.
The vocals across this whole release are killer and you hear that rumbling rasp in those screens, which definitely lends a hand to the death metal aspect of their influences. This also, of course, builds that energy and intensity levels even higher.
This whole record showcased the band's ability to pack a lot into one track and with such creative and experimental changes, time signatures, and pompous energy that really has a fierceness and aggression that leaves a mark.
Again, listen to this EP in full. From beginning to end is the only way to do it, and when you do, turn it up because that's how it was meant to be heard.
There's no point in listening to this record at minimal volume.
Check this out now, get ready to headbang, and remember where you heard it first.
