A new single from David Brookings and the Average Lookings delivers a very warm and welcoming love song of sorts and does so in the form of a lush singer-songwriter and indie-pop style that feels genuine and gives off such a robust character that you end up getting attached to it right from the start.
"Shelby" it's quite a beautiful song and the sentiment is something that pulls up the heartstrings because it's about someone who loves another and knows that the other loves him back and it really does talk about the story of their life together and how they built this life with each other.
The sentiment is more about how it feels for him and that's something that comes through very relatable, and when you listen to the track, if you have a loved one that you've built a life with, your own memories will start popping into your head and I think that's very connective musically.
I love the sort of classic and pop-rock vibe that this gives off because it's very bright and the song has a perfect energy as it feels sort of freeing and breezy in a way.
The guitar tones are perfect because they're not over the top and the progression is addictive but it's really those vocals that come through so welcoming and that is part of what builds the character that the song delivers as well.
The way that David lays those vocals down are double double-tracked a lot and it makes me think of artists like Elliott Smith for some reason which is definitely not a bad thing.
It does indeed have that very classic rock influence in its veins and you can get attached to this song quickly.
One of the things I love about this track is the guitar work because it adds such a thick layer of gracefulness to the track in a way. And that's the thing. This track does have a sort of smooth approach although it is a rock song of sorts.
This is a very memorable track and the chorus of it will either have you singing along by the third time around or it will just end up bouncing around in your brain for hours after the song has ended.
The best part is, that the only way to satiate something like that is to go and listen to the track again. In my opinion, that is smart songwriting, but I think it comes to David and the gang quite naturally.
I'm also really digging this almost live performance energy that they give off and it seems as though everyone involved is feeding off of each other the whole time letting the song feel flowing and forward moving.
Upon listening to this track, I took a little bit of a deep dive into the band's back catalog and upon doing so I found a couple of albums that are outstanding and indeed show the evolution of the band's sound and songwriting.
This single is actually part of an EP of sorts as it is the lead single followed by three other demos, but these demos are really well done as well.
The three other tracks showcase some of the different sides of how the songwriting is done and their unique sort of rock approach. Although they say demo on the tracks, these are really performed damn near perfectly and the production is great.
I love a record that gives you a little bit extra and this one certainly does that in all the best ways.
I would certainly start by listening to "Shelby" when you get a chance and then checking out some of the previous releases along with the demo tracks that come along with this single because it's all well worth listening to especially if you like the one track.
This release showed a lot of character and personality, it came through honestly and had a beautiful energy that lets the song come through exactly as it was meant to.
Take a listen to this track when you can and remember what you heard it first.
